People with disabilities represent 9% of the U.S. working-age population yet make up only 3% of the STEM workforce. Those who do enter STEM fields often face organizational and attitudinal barriers that hinder their ability to thrive. The exclusion of disabled individuals from STEM problem-solving contributes to broader societal inequities, which can be matters of life and death.
In this engaging keynote, Dr. Pearson draws from her lived experience with disability and 30 years as an engineer in higher education, research, and consulting. She will share actionable strategies to help your organization RE-DE-FINE STEM with —not just for— disabled employees and the wider community.
There’s a popular saying: “The only constant in life is change.” Yet, many STEM organizations struggle to move beyond “the way we’ve always done it.” It’s ironic – disciplines celebrated for creativity, innovation, and discovery often become stagnant when facing change. Drawing on the premise of her podcast, ENGINEERING CH∆NGE®, Dr. Pearson explores common challenges in leading change and offers practical, people-centered strategies to overcome them.
Engineers and scientists are charged with devising solutions to a myriad of societal challenges. These challenges are not one-size-fits-all, and neither are their optimal solutions. To best serve society, we must educate, graduate, and employ scientists and engineers from diverse backgrounds and engage them in problem solving with, not just for, the communities we serve. With examples from her research and leadership roles, Dr. Pearson will present strategies rooted in her call to REDEFINE STEM.
